With fall right around the corner, we're dishing on the essential shoes we'll be wearing during the cooler months to come.

As the leaves begin to change and a chill returns to the air, it’s finally time to update our fall footwear. It’s also time to officially welcome tall boots and feminine flats back into the rotation! Beyond that, we’ve discovered that embellishments and attention to detail are showing up this season — think bright colors, adornments, and unexpected textures — so we’ve included a fun mix of both classic and adventurous picks. Take a look!

We are grateful to all our sponsors:

Who doesn’t love a great fall boot? The style that stands out this season is the tall boot — whether landing just below the knee or above it. Try styling your tall boots with skirts and dresses that hit just above the top of the boot. They also work well over elevated leggings or skinny jeans, paired with an oversize button-down or classic sweater. (Despite denim currently trending away from skinny jeans to more relaxed fits, you can still break out your skinnies to show off these boots!)

We’re partial to this deep brown suede boot from Dolce Vita, as it can amplify any on-trend monochromatic look, and the stacked gum sole offers both comfort and traction. To infuse a little fun into a simpler ensemble, we love this taupe patent leather boot from Hampden Clothing. If you prefer a lower heel, this black knee-high pair will make an easy go-to pick for the coming months, and we always love a Western-inspired option. But, if you’re here to really make a statement, opt for a fun patterned pair!

Mules are our most worn shoes during the transitional seasons of late summer and fall. Consider purchasing a pair with a kitten heel for the in-between and stylish choice. Clogs have been trending for a few seasons now, and they’re still going strong, but there are even more choices to be found, especially in the heeled mule category. Here, we’ve found a casual and classic nude clog from Oak Hall, a kitten-back mule from Anthropologie, and a more adventurous leather pair with crystal buckle straps from Hampden Clothing.

Arguably the number one shoe trend of the fall season? Sky-high heels! Break-your-ankle platforms, in particular, have become a trend we’re seeing everywhere. If you want to make a statement, consider a pair of blue velvet platform heels or a pair of black taffeta ones . And, if you can’t do the platform look but love a sky-high heel, here’s one for you. Wear them with jeans or trousers for a more casual vibe. Or, if you are headed out on the town, show off a little leg with a minidress or skirt.

Curiously, the polar opposite of sky-high heels – flats — have also returned to the limelight. Feminine yet functional versions have been spotted on the streets at fashion week and all over social media. Our favorite thing about flats is their versatility. They can be styled with everything from casual jeans to formal gowns. We love the timeless, classic cut of the flat from Sarah Flint below, while this suede buckle shoe option from Ann Mashburn and Tory Burch’s square toe ballet flat from Nordstrom come in statement-making colors such as metallic gold and bright orange.
